So, is this the true Stephen Fenech?
I’ve been a follower of Tech Guide for years now, an Aussie technology podcast where each week Editor/Host Stephen Fenech talks about the latest tech to arrive on our Aussie shores. And now and again, he’ll make reference to another podcast which he hosts with his mate Trevor Long, called Two Blokes Talking Tech. And after 5-6 years of hearing these references to his other show, I decided to check-it-out, after I ran out of podcasts to listen to one morning.
And as a result, I’ve now seen/heard a different side to Stephen! It’s so weird, you think you know someone after so many years of association (one sided association), and then boom! You’re perception of someone is utterly transformed!
On Tech Guide, Stephen on his very lonesome, just talks about tech, probably following a dot point list of all the things he wants to cover off, a bit scripted and very much to the point. Yes, he does share information about himself, perhaps a little bit too much, like being a Rabbitohs supporter, living in Mascot, having a famous brother (Mario Fenech), and of course being a massive tech nerd. However, when he’s with his mate Trevor, wow! We see a totally different side to him, the bantering, the occasional cuss word, but the largest contrast is the fact that Trevor utterly owns him! Trevor’s ribbing of Stephen is harsher, his profanities more often (which then encourages Stephen to bloke-up and follow suit), and he utterly makes Stephen look small! It’s quite strange, Stephen on his own show, he projects himself as the King of his own domain, but when they’re together on ‘Two Blokes Talking Tech’, Stephen is made to take the little brother role- you know it as Trev has the larger platform, the bigger giveaways (he was actually thinking of giving away an Electric car)- when I actually won a gift from Stephen 2 years ago when celebrating episode 500, and I won a Bluetooth speaker……. Not an Electric car is it?), and the largest sign of Trev’s dominance over Stephen is the fact that Stephen has to come to Trevor Long’s place each time to record the podcast. Ouch!
But, aside from losing a bit of respect for poor old Stephen Fenech, the Two Blokes Talking tech podcast has been the most listened to pod at our place since I started following it 2 weeks ago. Not because their content is out of this world, but for the simple fact that there’s so much of it!
I don’t know how these guys don’t hate each other by now! Due to spending so much time together. As a duel they record:
Two Blokes Talking Tech- Weekly
Two Blokes Talking Electric Cars – Weekly
The Best Movies You’ve Never Seen – Weekly
And there’s a supplementary podcast drop, where they just chat about anything, this one from the podcast listing is just called ‘Private’ (also Weekly).
And on their own, they record their own shows, Tech Guide (Stephen Fenech) and EFTM (Trevor Long) which is also uploaded to the TBTT feed. So, in a week, you get 6 episodes of content, so much content that you can’t possibly listen to them all! So, I just pick and choose what I end-up consuming. Funny enough, I’ve really enjoyed ‘The Best Movies You’ve never Seen’, as Stephen is a movie buff, and Trevor is not. So, after each of them have watched the film on their own, they come back together to discuss the film in length. Stephen goes through the entire plot summary (like Wikipedia), with sound snippets from the film and then they undertake a de-brief. This is great, for someone like me who is blind, and often loses the nuances of films (or have never sat through any of them), they actually make me feel as if I’ve just seen the film for myself! So much so, that one morning I told my wife that I had just watched ‘Minority Report’, and told her about the preface of the film, and she was so confused asking why and how I had found the time that morning to watch a film! Hehe he.
And the blokes just cover off so many different topics that me and my own best mate have interest in, i.e. technology, Formula One, gaming etc. So, after this post I’m also going to recommend this podcast to him, as it basically encapsulates everything he is interested in, right down to Electric cars!
So yeah, if you’re a typical bloke, and you’re interested in all the usual stuff boys are interested in, then check these guys out, ‘Two Blokes Talking Tech’. In the hours and hours of content they put out there each week, you’re bound to find something which peaks your interest!
