Have I lost the love for American Football?

As week 18 (final week of the regular season) in the National Football League (NFL aka American Football) is about to kick-off, I ask myself: have I lost the love for the game? As this year I’m particularly meh about the entire thing.

Could it be the fact that the NFL is a 365-day operation, and after following it closely and non-stop for 7 years, I’m starting to get a bit fed up with the endless routine?

Or could it be that the NFL Podcasters who I follow religiously (Around The NFL), themselves sound a bit ‘tired’ with it all? Now that they got paid, and are pumping out double the amount of content to justify their increased salaries? And their tiredness (which you can hear in their voices), is rubbing off on us the listeners and contributing to my feelings of meh?

Or is it the fact that there are so many injuries this season, particularly to Quarterbacks, so the actual product of football is diminished this year?

Or is it the cost-of-living pressures, resulting in some cutbacks on my part, so that this year I didn’t pay for TuneIn Premium radio. Therefore, no access to live broadcasts, thus the disconnection with the game?

Or is it the fact that my dad passed away in December, and he was the one who originally introduced me to the game of Gridiron. So, now that he’s no longer around, am I feeling his loss even more so, as I can’t chat with him about games which we both watched?

Well, I think my feelings of meh, is a combination of all of the above. But if you too feel a bit meh, about the NFL season this year, and like me you suffer from FOMO! Here is how you can still follow the game each week, FREE of charge!

As I mentioned before, this year I chose not to pay for TuneIn Premium, which enables you access to live radio broadcast of all 16 games each week. I made this decision, due to the need to cut down on some of our discretionary spending (saving AU $26 per month), and frankly I didn’t think I was getting my money’s worth out of the subscription either. As in the end with the Australia-United States time difference, I was only listening to one game a week, and even less than that once Southern Hemisphere went into Summertime, and the time difference meant that the first game kicked off at 5am, and by 7am when I started work for the day, the early slate of games was barely into the 3rd Quarter. So, it seemed that paying for Premium didn’t make sense then, if I was only listening to 3 quarters of 4 games a month.

So, the alternative to follow the games, is through ESPN radio, as on Sundays (Monday morning our time), you can catch ‘Gameday’, where host Shae Peppler Cornette, Coach Herm Edwards, and former front-office Executive Mike Tannenbaum monitor each game live, reporting on scores and breaking down big plays as they happen. Just picture these guys frantically watching 7 monitors at once, so you don’t have to! It’s actually quite a nice way to follow the games each week, as if you follow only one game, it could get a bit boring at times if it happens to be a low scoring affair (or one sided). But because you’re following all games at one time, there’s always bound to be some scoring, action, or drama, all of the time! And you’re not left doing the mad flipping between games or hitting refresh every 2 minutes on your device for the latest score updates, but the ESPN Gameday team, are doing all the frantic monitoring on your behalf!  Not to mention you’re getting expert analysis and opinions from NFL Insiders, so even though I’m still only able to catch 3 Quarters of the early games, and only see the final scores at the end of the day- I still feel involved enough with the games this year, thanks to ESPN radio, they have appeased my sense of FOMO. Haaha.

And did I mention that it’s FREE? So, if you too want to catch the NFL live on Monday mornings and are looking for a cost effective method (or no cost method), look no further than ESPN radio! Gameday coverage starts at 1pm Eastern (in the United States), and 5am Eastern (if you’re in Australia). Just ask your Google assistant to play ‘ESPN Radio on TuneIn’.
