In what could easily be mistaken for a plot from a blockbuster film, a Dominican man fighting for survival in the expansive Caribbean Sea relied on an unlikely hero—a bottle of ketchup and a dash of ingenuity.
Ketchup: The Unlikely Lifeline
Elvis François, a 47-year-old from the Dominican Republic, captured global headlines after surviving an astonishing three weeks alone at sea. With just a few meager supplies—namely ketchup, garlic powder, and Maggi cubes—mixed with water, he managed to stay alive against all odds.
“I had nothing to eat except a bottle of ketchup, garlic powder, and Maggi cubes,” François recounted in a video released by the Colombian Navy. “I mixed everything with water and managed to survive for around 24 days.” His ordeal serves as a powerful example of human resilience and resourcefulness.
Lost and Adrift
The saga began in December when François set out to repair a sailboat near Saint Martin. However, fierce winds and sudden weather changes quickly propelled him into the open sea, leaving him disoriented and desperate.
As the navy explained, “With no navigation skills, he found himself lost and unable to control the boat or its equipment.” François attempted to send out distress signals, but they were met with silence.
“There was nothing I could do but wait… 24 days adrift, isolated from everyone, unsure of my location and my fate. It was incredibly challenging. At times, I despaired and thought about my family,” he shared, shedding light on the psychological strain of his situation.
A Glimmer of Hope
Just when hope seemed to fade, a signal of salvation emerged from above. Three weeks into his ordeal, François spotted an airplane. Utilizing a mirror, he reflected sunlight as a call for help.
On January 15th, he successfully caught the attention of the aircraft. “It worked,” he reflected fondly. The plane spotted him, leading to a rescue operation that located François’s sailboat 120 nautical miles northwest of Puerto Bolivar in northern La Guajira.

François was eventually rescued and taken to immigration services, who facilitated his safe return to the Dominican Republic. What began as a dire situation morphed into a remarkable tale of perseverance and survival.
His experience highlights that amidst dire circumstances, a blend of resilience, resourcefulness, and a sprinkle of fortune can carve a path from despair to salvation.
